Pierre Cardin

Pierre Cardin was born in Italy in 1922 and moved to Paris in 1945 to study Architecture. He founded his own fashion house in 1950 and launched his career as one of the leading figures in Haute Couture.

As well as a fashion designer he also designed a large amount of furniture. Cardin was known for his avant garde style and his ‘space age’ designs. These designs are so well executed that they are timeless and work in a diverse range of interiors. He has been quoted as describing his furniture as “the opposite of straight sober clean lines, it is furniture made up of organic cells; all I did was reveal their aesthetic quality”. He worked largely with wood and new generation lacquers with a unique quality that is represented through attention to detail and precision.
